There is a reason your comfort zone is your comfort zone. Well, it’s comfortable. Yet, if we aren’t careful our comfort zone can become a trap – one that is difficult to get out of. Maura Sweeney (http://www.maura4u.com) knows a little bit about that.

At the age of 50, Maura stepped out of her comfort zone and took dance lessons – proving to herself and her daughter that there is a life outside of the comfort zone. The great thing about stepping out of your comfort zone expands your zone and makes other forays out of it that much easier.

Maura, Jean and I had an insightful and entertaining conversation about moving beyond familiarity and going into the unknown. Amazingly, it isn’t as scary as you might think.

Maura has even written a book about exiting your comfort zone. A free copy awaits Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! listeners. Just put Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! in the subject line and receive a downloadable copy of The Art of Happiness Vol I: Exiting Your Comfort Zone.

When I met Debbie Evans at an open house event, I knew I had to have her on my show. Her passion was infectious. She was selling Sheago Organics, showcasing body cremes and butters . She was so infectious that I even bought some (and I never buy anything like that)!

She isn’t just passionate about her products but she’s passionate about her life, her marriage and her now-adult children. She is also passionate about the entrepreneurial spirit.

Just listen to Debbie and you too will feel her passion. We had a fun, engaging and uplifting conversation and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

In the river of life., there are times of smooth sailing and then there are other time. It ebbs and it flows. So, what do you do when the waters get choppy and times get hard? How you handle these situations can determine how long these times last and how bad they can be.

On this episode, we’ll talk about Silencing Your Inner B***h and Finetuning Your Focus. Life has taught me a few lessons that help during these times. In fact, I’m in choppy waters myself and I’ll be sharing how I’m using these very tools I’ll be discussing with you.

You can also read about this on the Fun. Feisty. Fabulous blog: http://www.funfeistyfab.com/overwhelmed-and-undervalued/

Come on over to our Facebook page and share what you do to get through the hard

Panty hose, shined shoes, dresses, skirts and suits, remember when we used to wear them? Oh, my darlin’, things have changed. Jeans are acceptable in a growing number of workplaces and even churches. Dressing to go out to a nice restaurant is quickly becoming a thing of the pass.

Let’s try to make some sense of it … at least at work anyway. What is professional, business professional, business casual and casual. When do you wear which? Does how you dress even matter anymore. According to a lot of high school and college students, it doesn’t matter and many have begun rebelling to the concept of a dress code. Managers have a hard time enforcing them (especially when a male manager has to speak to a female subordinate).

  • Where can you go when you want to dress formally?
  • Where can’t you wear jeans?
  • What do you do when someone comes to work looking like a hot mess and violating the dress code?

We’ll answer these questions and more on this episode of Fun. Feisty. Fabulous!

And, introducing … Jean Day … the new co-host of Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! She teaches college. She’s an author (Living Gratitude Daily https://www.amazon.com/Live-Gratitude-Daily-Abundance-Love/dp/1541091310/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492906383&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=living+gratitude+daily+jean+day). She’s engaging, intelligent and entertaining and I’m honored to share the mic with her. So tune in and get to know Jean.

Then stick around as we discuss the travails of dating after 40! Why does it seem so hard. How do you play the dating game when the rules have changed (and seem to continue to be changing).

  • Does paying for dinner means paying for sex?
  • Adventures in online dating
  • What is (and who is in) the Cavalcade of Clowns?
  • And, where are the men? (Pretty sure they aren’t in my living room or in my backyard).

So where are the men??? If you know or have any other comment, we'd love to hear from you on the Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! Facebook page!

We also discussed several must read books.

Feud. How to Get Away with Murder. The Good Fight. Empire. All shows feature strong, stylish, sexy female leads. They also feature women who have passed the 40 year old threshold. Slowly but surely, the days of actors being relegated to mother and grandmother roles are becoming a thing of the past. For sure, a lot of women are mothers and grandmothers and that is great but we are also vibrant, confident, attractive and sensual.

Ryan Murphy, producer of Feud and American Horror Story did a great interview with ABC News about using actresses over 40 – who are hitting their stride and the audience that they reflect. So, let’s talk about it.

  • Don’t women over 40 have a great deal of economic power?
  • Aren’t women over 40 just as interesting as those under 40?
  • Why do men over 40 almost always get paired with women who could be their daughters?

Answers to these questions and more on this episode of Fun. Feisty. Fabulous!

Head on over to the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/funfeistyfab) and let’s talk about it.

Getting Older is truly an adventure. What adds to the journey is all the things that you really didn’t know or consider. During this episode, I look at some of the more unexpected aspects of aging and I give a few must-needed doses of reality.

  • Getting older. It happens. Deal with it.
  • Older and attractive aren’t mutually exclusive terms.
  • You can’t ever prepare for death but it happens a lot more often as you age.
  • You are getting older, but so are your parents.
  • Doing what you love as your career can be overrated.
  • Don’t wait for love to find you, work for it (like you work for everything else)

Finding work after 40 … how hard is it? What about ageism? Do your salary requirements really knock you out of the running? What can I expect if I end up working for or with a bunch of millennials? There are valid questions and concerns when it comes to changing employment after 40.

Of course, at the core of ever myth there is a bit of truth. In this Myth Busting episode, we delve into some of the more popular concepts surrounding work for the woman over 40 separating the evidence from the embellishment. There is hope to be found (as well as employment).

My personal employment history dispels some of the very myths I’m busting. I’ve managed to find work twice (after layoffs) after the age of 40. I work with millennials. Some of my coworkers were hired after the age of 50 and I’m making more money than I ever have.

If you or someone you know is looking for work, you’ll want to listen!

More than Sadness

Living with Clinical Depression

At the age of 44, after a suicide attempt, I was diagnosed with clinical depression. Looking back at my life, I had been suffering for quite a while. Since then, I have managed my depression with antidepressants and therapy. Still, right now, I’m in a depressive episode.

Sure, everyone has been down, lonely or ‘depressed’ but clinical depression goes beyond just a mood. You feel it physically. You struggle with it mentally and you deal with it emotionally. It is like a massive wave that overcomes you.

In this episode, I talk about how clinical depression affects me (everyone’s experiences it differently). Fellow depression sufferers should be able to relate, but people who don’t suffer from it or who know people who do, might gain some insight.

Finally, I end the episode with a few things that people can do to support those who suffer from this illness.

Let's Talk about Sex

Did you know that women over 40 don’t want sex? And that no one wants sex with a 40+ woman? Did you know that once women cross the over 40 threshold move from sexy to frumpy? According to conventional wisdom, these statements are true.

Yet, if you balked or downright laughed out loud then you know the truth. These are myths; over exaggerations and old wives’ tales masquerading as the truth. The danger comes when you hear them enough you begin to believe them, ever so subtly they seep into your consciousness and infiltrate your thoughts and your actions. And, they shouldn’t!

So, we are going on an adventure … a myth-busting adventure. Over the next few episodes, we’ll bust some of the myths surrounding women over 40 in career, health, diet, and today, sex.

  • Does perimenopause or menopause kill your sex drive?
  • Do 40+ woman stop wanting sex?
  • Is dating impossible as you get older?
Listen and find out!

Head over to the Fun. Feisty. Fab! Facebook page (www.facebook.com/funfeistyfab) to share your thoughts and stories.

Social Media Resolutions

Remember when you set up your first social media profile? Remember how fun it was? You reconnected with old friends and classmates. You shared photos with family and friends. You logged on and had fun. It was enjoyable. Well, that was then, this is now.

In the past two weeks, I have heard of harrowing crimes that were proudly broadcast on Facebook Live and Snapchat. I have stopped commenting and even reading comments on posts from news stations and magazines. The hate and vitriol is just too much. I have had my intelligence questioned, been belittled and demeaned and even had racial slurs hurled at me.

Yes, the tone and even the content of social media has changed. I’ll admit, I’m on it a lot less nowadays. However, I gave it some thought and came up with 8 Social Media Resolutions. Resolutions, to me anyway, is synonymous with wishful thinking. So, these are eight resolutions I wish people would undertake.

Listen to the show and then you can find all eight in a post on the Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/funfeistyfab).

Resolutions Don't Work ...

New Year’s! It’s a time when everyone gives themselves a big do-over. The slate is wiped clean. We give ourselves a fresh start. Optimism is in the air and it is infectious. The one thing that is guaranteed to put a big damper on the positivity can be summed up in one word: resolutions. Once upon a time, almost 90% of Americans set resolutions. Now it is hovering at around 40% and falling every year. Resolutions have fallen out of favor because, often, they don’t work.

Over time resolutions became synonymous with failure. You make them but in the back of your mind, you don’t really think you’ll succeed. You’ll start with flash and end with a fizzle weeks or maybe even months later. People got tired of being sick and tired and a time-honored tradition quickly fell out of favor.

It’s high time for a new outlook. Resolutions are dead. Let’s not try to revive them. Let’s look at something new. I created Golden Goals. As a trainer, I have trained several goal-setting methods. Along the way, I realized there were some serious gaps, and gaps that affect your ability to succeed with your goal. The Golden Goals Method fills in these goal-setting potholes. It’s time that we dispel the wishful thinking of the outdated and ineffective resolution and replace them with action and planning – things that really work.

Golden Goals are described and all five steps are discussed in this episode.

Taming the Past

It’s the last episode of 2016, and the first episode with the new, shorter, more targeted focus.

Since it is the end of the year, let’s look at a more empowering way of looking at the past. We all have ups and downs – and the downs usually seem more vivid and more detailed than the positive (which we often tend to gloss over. Experts say that we see the negative more vividly because of one word: emotion. The negative tends to stand out because there is more emotion, and intense emotion, attached to it.

So, what does one do to reign in the negative? The event has already happened so we can’t change the event or the consequences associated with it, but we can change the way we look back at it. Instead of reliving the event mentally, we can search the event for the lessons the event can teach us. What can we do to prevent this mistake from happening again? What did it show us about ourselves? How did it make us stronger, wiser or better?

By focusing on lessons to learn, we can take bit of the sting out of the memory. We end up more empowered than demoralized.

Next week, in the new year, I’ll share my antidote to New Year’s Resolutions.

From Tragedy to Triumph

Fun, feisty and fabulous means different things to everyone. So what does it mean for you.

What do you do for fun? When is the last time you’ve laughed or had a good time? If you can’t remember, you aren’t having enough fun. One thing I do for fun is make up silly songs about my dog. Listen to All about that Jake here: https://youtu.be/NVTdrLzwexY .

Twana Lawler is a fighter, a survivor, a warrior.  In other words, she defines feisty. A teenage mother who faced domestic abuse, had to fight for custody of her daughters, raised them on her own and found herself HIV+ after a decade of celibacy. But like any warrior she fought her battles … and she won. Now, she’s an author, a playwright, a public speaker

Book: My Life: From Tragedy to Destiny

For Fabulous, I discuss how I had to let go of my rigid and unattainable (for me) definition of fabulous. It wasn’t until I embraced my quirks and idiosyncrasies that I realized that my fabulous is my own fabulousness. So celebrate what makes you you? Find it. Own it. Revel in it!

Oh and if you want to hear Jake's song and see our video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVTdrLzwexY

Lady, Woman ... a Bit of Both

I’m getting feisty with author/coach Timogi T. Jackson who says, in her latest book, I’m a Lady and a Woman. While all of us females are both, each of us tends to have either a Lady essence or a Woman essence that dominates. Timogi describes and celebrates each essence. While each one is different neither one is better or stronger or more useful than the other. I have a Lady essence but I know how and when to use my Woman essence. Which one are you? Listen in and find out.

You can find Timogi’s books (and even t-shirts) at her site: http://www.timogijackson.com

For fun, we’ll look at the trend towards automation and how with every technological step forward, we tend to take a step back in intelligence. Remember when we had to know how to spell instead of relying on spellcheck. Remember life before GPS?  Remember when we used to remember phone numbers? If smartphones are making us dumber, what will happen when we get smart cars and smart refrigerators?

Let’s feel fabulous by indulging in a little ME time. It’s great if you have an afternoon, an evening, a day or a whole weekend, but you can indulge in some me time with just a half hour. Doing something just for you isn’t selfish. It isn’t self-centered. It isn’t egotistical. It is necessary, needed and essential to our wellbeing.

TIme to Fight Your Fears
  • Would you survive a zombie apocalypse?
  • What fears are holding you back?
  • Is health more than physical?

These questions (and maybe more) will be answered on this episode of the Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! podcast.

I came late to The Walking Dead party. Over the summer, I caught up on six seasons so I’d be all caught up when Season 7 started. I’ve been watching it weekly; but I have to admit, I don’t think I’m cut out to be a zombie apocalypse survivor and I’ll tell you why.

Tawanna Kelley is one of my Fab Femmes (you can catch those episodes every month). However, she’s also a motivational speaker who specializes in leadership training and on helping people overcome fear. She talks about the fears we have and what we can do to overcome them. It’s time to make your dreams come true and you don’t have time to let fear stop you.

Finally, it is hard to feel fabulous if you don’t feel your best. Yet, health is more than physical. Taking care of your emotional and mental health is just as important. I share my story of suicide and depression to drive home the point that you are never too old, and it is never too late to seek emotional or mental health. It’s time to end the mental health stigma and embrace all facets of our health.

And So It Begins

It’s the premiere episode of the Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! podcast – a podcast designed for professional women over 40!

While most episodes will go from 30 – 40 minutes, this episode is short and to the point, introducing who I am (Karyn Beach, host/producer) and then defining exactly what I mean by fun, feisty and fabulous.

Oh, and I’ll also announce our first contest! Two lucky winners will receive $100 Amazon gift cards … just in time for holiday shopping!

Who are You?

I’m Karyn Beach, host of Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! and former host of the Get It Together Girl podcast. While I have a degree in journalism, I stepped away from that field a long time ago. Yet, I still missed it. Podcasting gives me the opportunity to go back to one of my first loves.

My second love is writing, so I blog at www.funfeistyfab.com and I have self-published five books available on Amazon.com. I’m also a certified life coach and as such, I am committed and passionate about helping others live their lives to the fullest.

I used to say that in the newspaper of life, I would be a comic strip somewhere between Cathy and the Far Side. However, it is 2016 and no one reads newspapers anymore. So, in the myriad of cable and on-demand networks, I would be a television show, sort of a cross between The New Girl and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. In upcoming episodes, there will be plenty of time to share dating horror stories and embarrassing stories.

Why Fun. Feisty. Fabulous!

With Get It Together Girl, I dove right in and created weekly episodes for about 2 years. I had fun and interviewed some amazing people. The only problem was that I dove in so quickly, I didn’t really prepare as I should have. I kept learning things I should have done before the show started or while it was still relatively new to boost my listenership.

Clearly, a redo was in order. In the spring of 2016, I discontinued Get It Together Girl and took some time to research and prepare my new show. This time, instead of reaching out to all women, I would focus on women like me, professional women over 40.

When I googled ‘women over 40’, I found a lot of dating and fashion advice. Like you, I think I’m a little bit more than what I wear and who’s on my arm. And just like that, Fun. Feisty. Fabulous was born.

What is this all about?

Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! (or Triple F because the full name can be a mouthful) celebrates who we are at this point in our lives. 40 isn’t the new 30. 40 is 40. 45 is 45. 50 is 50 and so on. You’ve lived a life filled with experience and knowledge and that should be acknowledged and celebrated. You have earned your age so embrace it.

When I talk about fun, I’m talking about anything that brings you peace and relaxation and that could be anything from taking a stroll to an afternoon of shopping or an night of amazing sex! In the stricter sense, fun is about laughter, goofiness and just being silly! We’ll do that too!

That fighting spirit, that fierce independence is what I am talking about when I talk about being feisty. As we grow older we naturally grow feistier, get better at speaking up for ourselves and going after what we want. In this segment, we’ll feature real women who have embraced their feistiness and have an incredible story to tell.

New episodes are available every Tuesday around noon. Listen on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and other podcast outlets.

Join the Triple F Facebook community to comment on the show or connect with other fun, feisty and fabulous women.
