There is a reason your comfort zone is your comfort zone. Well, it’s comfortable. Yet, if we aren’t careful our comfort zone can become a trap – one that is difficult to get out of. Maura Sweeney (http://www.maura4u.com) knows a little bit about that.

At the age of 50, Maura stepped out of her comfort zone and took dance lessons – proving to herself and her daughter that there is a life outside of the comfort zone. The great thing about stepping out of your comfort zone expands your zone and makes other forays out of it that much easier.

Maura, Jean and I had an insightful and entertaining conversation about moving beyond familiarity and going into the unknown. Amazingly, it isn’t as scary as you might think.

Maura has even written a book about exiting your comfort zone. A free copy awaits Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! listeners. Just put Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! in the subject line and receive a downloadable copy of The Art of Happiness Vol I: Exiting Your Comfort Zone.

When I met Debbie Evans at an open house event, I knew I had to have her on my show. Her passion was infectious. She was selling Sheago Organics, showcasing body cremes and butters . She was so infectious that I even bought some (and I never buy anything like that)!

She isn’t just passionate about her products but she’s passionate about her life, her marriage and her now-adult children. She is also passionate about the entrepreneurial spirit.

Just listen to Debbie and you too will feel her passion. We had a fun, engaging and uplifting conversation and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

In the river of life., there are times of smooth sailing and then there are other time. It ebbs and it flows. So, what do you do when the waters get choppy and times get hard? How you handle these situations can determine how long these times last and how bad they can be.

On this episode, we’ll talk about Silencing Your Inner B***h and Finetuning Your Focus. Life has taught me a few lessons that help during these times. In fact, I’m in choppy waters myself and I’ll be sharing how I’m using these very tools I’ll be discussing with you.

You can also read about this on the Fun. Feisty. Fabulous blog: http://www.funfeistyfab.com/overwhelmed-and-undervalued/

Panty hose, shined shoes, dresses, skirts and suits, remember when we used to wear them? Oh, my darlin’, things have changed. Jeans are acceptable in a growing number of workplaces and even churches. Dressing to go out to a nice restaurant is quickly becoming a thing of the pass.

Let’s try to make some sense of it … at least at work anyway. What is professional, business professional, business casual and casual. When do you wear which? Does how you dress even matter anymore. According to a lot of high school and college students, it doesn’t matter and many have begun rebelling to the concept of a dress code. Managers have a hard time enforcing them (especially when a male manager has to speak to a female subordinate).

  • Where can you go when you want to dress formally?
  • Where can’t you wear jeans?
  • What do you do when someone comes to work looking like a hot mess and violating the dress code?

We’ll answer these questions and more on this episode of Fun. Feisty. Fabulous!

She’s engaging, intelligent and entertaining and I’m honored to share the mic with her. So tune in and get to know Jean.

Then stick around as we discuss the travails of dating after 40! Why does it seem so hard. How do you play the dating game when the rules have changed (and seem to continue to be changing).

  • Does paying for dinner means paying for sex?
  • Adventures in online dating
  • What is (and who is in) the Cavalcade of Clowns?
  • And, where are the men? (Pretty sure they aren’t in my living room or in my backyard).

So where are the men??? If you know or have any other comment, we'd love to hear from you on the Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! Facebook page!

We also discussed several must read books.

Feud. How to Get Away with Murder. The Good Fight. Empire. All shows feature strong, stylish, sexy female leads. They also feature women who have passed the 40 year old threshold. Slowly but surely, the days of actors being relegated to mother and grandmother roles are becoming a thing of the past. For sure, a lot of women are mothers and grandmothers and that is great but we are also vibrant, confident, attractive and sensual.

Ryan Murphy, producer of Feud and American Horror Story did a great interview with ABC News about using actresses over 40 – who are hitting their stride and the audience that they reflect. So, let’s talk about it.

  • Don’t women over 40 have a great deal of economic power?
  • Aren’t women over 40 just as interesting as those under 40?
  • Why do men over 40 almost always get paired with women who could be their daughters?

Answers to these questions and more on this episode of Fun. Feisty. Fabulous!

Head on over to the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/funfeistyfab) and let’s talk about it.

Getting Older is truly an adventure. What adds to the journey is all the things that you really didn’t know or consider. During this episode, I look at some of the more unexpected aspects of aging and I give a few must-needed doses of reality.

  • Getting older. It happens. Deal with it.
  • Older and attractive aren’t mutually exclusive terms.
  • You can’t ever prepare for death but it happens a lot more often as you age.
  • You are getting older, but so are your parents.
  • Doing what you love as your career can be overrated.
  • Don’t wait for love to find you, work for it (like you work for everything else)

Finding work after 40 … how hard is it? What about ageism? Do your salary requirements really knock you out of the running? What can I expect if I end up working for or with a bunch of millennials? There are valid questions and concerns when it comes to changing employment after 40.

Of course, at the core of ever myth there is a bit of truth. In this Myth Busting episode, we delve into some of the more popular concepts surrounding work for the woman over 40 separating the evidence from the embellishment. There is hope to be found (as well as employment).

My personal employment history dispels some of the very myths I’m busting. I’ve managed to find work twice (after layoffs) after the age of 40. I work with millennials. Some of my coworkers were hired after the age of 50 and I’m making more money than I ever have.

If you or someone you know is looking for work, you’ll want to listen!

More than Sadness

Living with Clinical Depression

At the age of 44, after a suicide attempt, I was diagnosed with clinical depression. Looking back at my life, I had been suffering for quite a while. Since then, I have managed my depression with antidepressants and therapy. Still, right now, I’m in a depressive episode.

Sure, everyone has been down, lonely or ‘depressed’ but clinical depression goes beyond just a mood. You feel it physically. You struggle with it mentally and you deal with it emotionally. It is like a massive wave that overcomes you.

In this episode, I talk about how clinical depression affects me (everyone’s experiences it differently). Fellow depression sufferers should be able to relate, but people who don’t suffer from it or who know people who do, might gain some insight.

Finally, I end the episode with a few things that people can do to support those who suffer from this illness.

Let's Talk about Sex

Did you know that women over 40 don’t want sex? And that no one wants sex with a 40+ woman? Did you know that once women cross the over 40 threshold move from sexy to frumpy? According to conventional wisdom, these statements are true.

Yet, if you balked or downright laughed out loud then you know the truth. These are myths; over exaggerations and old wives’ tales masquerading as the truth. The danger comes when you hear them enough you begin to believe them, ever so subtly they seep into your consciousness and infiltrate your thoughts and your actions. And, they shouldn’t!

So, we are going on an adventure … a myth-busting adventure. Over the next few episodes, we’ll bust some of the myths surrounding women over 40 in career, health, diet, and today, sex.

  • Does perimenopause or menopause kill your sex drive?
  • Do 40+ woman stop wanting sex?
  • Is dating impossible as you get older?
Listen and find out!

Head over to the Fun. Feisty. Fab! Facebook page (www.facebook.com/funfeistyfab) to share your thoughts and stories.

Do You, Boo

Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! kicks off with an important announcement. As of this week, the podcast will move from weekly to bi-weekly.

The theme for tonight’s episode is Do You, Boo! or Do You! if you aren’t a fan of that particular term of endearment. Basically, as we get older, we often become surer of ourselves, what we want, what we’ll tolerate and what we need to fully express ourselves.

To do you, you don’t have to get upset, defend yourself or second-guess your choices. You just have to find what works for you and do it. Let judgements go and embrace your choices and the choices of others (even if they aren’t yours) with tact and class.

Whether it is your choice of a mate, career direction or just everyday personal choices, you don’t need anyone’s permission to live your life your way.

Living in Gratitude

You’ve heard it. You’re supposed to “have an attitude of gratitude.” But what does that really mean? Sure, it is easy to be grateful when things are generally going well or when you’ve had a good day. But, aren’t you supposed to have that grateful attitude when things are going well? The question becomes how do you do it? Not vague platitudes but how do you actually, step-by-step, apply gratitude when it isn’t easy or intuitive.

Jean Day is a contributing writer in the book, Live in Gratitude Daily: The Key to Love, Joy and Abundance, uses the powerful combination of daily devotionals and journaling to assist the reader in developing the habit of gratitude and taking the action to apply it to their daily lives.

A psychology professor and practicing Buddhist, Jean is familiar with practices and habits that can improve your life from the inside out. Join us as we look for the practical inside of the esoteric concept of gratitude.

Max Takes On New York City

One of the best part of podcasting is meeting really interesting people, several of whom I have had the honor of getting to know and proudly call friend. Maxwell Ivey is one of those people. He’s a blogger, a coach and a business man. He’s also completely blind. What I appreciate about Max is that he has never let his lack of sight stop him.

In fact, he recently boarded a train in his hometown of Houston bound for New York City. The Big Apple is intimidating for sighted people. A lot of people wouldn’t have even attempted such a trip; but Max isn’t a lot of people. He found an Air BnB and someone to accompany him around time and he was off. Times Square, Wicked on Broadway, riding the subway and the ferry. He had a true New York experience.

So he is stopping by to share his story and how it is that he manages to stay so positive and adventurous. Max is one person who could come up with a ton of excuses but he doesn’t. In fact, the word excuse doesn’t even seem to be in his vocabulary.

Join us as we celebrate adventure, gusty moves and embracing life.

Social Media Resolutions

Remember when you set up your first social media profile? Remember how fun it was? You reconnected with old friends and classmates. You shared photos with family and friends. You logged on and had fun. It was enjoyable. Well, that was then, this is now.

In the past two weeks, I have heard of harrowing crimes that were proudly broadcast on Facebook Live and Snapchat. I have stopped commenting and even reading comments on posts from news stations and magazines. The hate and vitriol is just too much. I have had my intelligence questioned, been belittled and demeaned and even had racial slurs hurled at me.

Yes, the tone and even the content of social media has changed. I’ll admit, I’m on it a lot less nowadays. However, I gave it some thought and came up with 8 Social Media Resolutions. Resolutions, to me anyway, is synonymous with wishful thinking. So, these are eight resolutions I wish people would undertake.

Listen to the show and then you can find all eight in a post on the Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/funfeistyfab).

Resolutions Don't Work ...

New Year’s! It’s a time when everyone gives themselves a big do-over. The slate is wiped clean. We give ourselves a fresh start. Optimism is in the air and it is infectious. The one thing that is guaranteed to put a big damper on the positivity can be summed up in one word: resolutions. Once upon a time, almost 90% of Americans set resolutions. Now it is hovering at around 40% and falling every year. Resolutions have fallen out of favor because, often, they don’t work.

Over time resolutions became synonymous with failure. You make them but in the back of your mind, you don’t really think you’ll succeed. You’ll start with flash and end with a fizzle weeks or maybe even months later. People got tired of being sick and tired and a time-honored tradition quickly fell out of favor.

It’s high time for a new outlook. Resolutions are dead. Let’s not try to revive them. Let’s look at something new. I created Golden Goals. As a trainer, I have trained several goal-setting methods. Along the way, I realized there were some serious gaps, and gaps that affect your ability to succeed with your goal. The Golden Goals Method fills in these goal-setting potholes. It’s time that we dispel the wishful thinking of the outdated and ineffective resolution and replace them with action and planning – things that really work.

Golden Goals are described and all five steps are discussed in this episode.
