Taming the Past

It’s the last episode of 2016, and the first episode with the new, shorter, more targeted focus.

Since it is the end of the year, let’s look at a more empowering way of looking at the past. We all have ups and downs – and the downs usually seem more vivid and more detailed than the positive (which we often tend to gloss over. Experts say that we see the negative more vividly because of one word: emotion. The negative tends to stand out because there is more emotion, and intense emotion, attached to it.

So, what does one do to reign in the negative? The event has already happened so we can’t change the event or the consequences associated with it, but we can change the way we look back at it. Instead of reliving the event mentally, we can search the event for the lessons the event can teach us. What can we do to prevent this mistake from happening again? What did it show us about ourselves? How did it make us stronger, wiser or better?

By focusing on lessons to learn, we can take bit of the sting out of the memory. We end up more empowered than demoralized.

Next week, in the new year, I’ll share my antidote to New Year’s Resolutions.

From Tragedy to Triumph

Fun, feisty and fabulous means different things to everyone. So what does it mean for you.

What do you do for fun? When is the last time you’ve laughed or had a good time? If you can’t remember, you aren’t having enough fun. One thing I do for fun is make up silly songs about my dog. Listen to All about that Jake here: https://youtu.be/NVTdrLzwexY .

Twana Lawler is a fighter, a survivor, a warrior.  In other words, she defines feisty. A teenage mother who faced domestic abuse, had to fight for custody of her daughters, raised them on her own and found herself HIV+ after a decade of celibacy. But like any warrior she fought her battles … and she won. Now, she’s an author, a playwright, a public speaker

Book: My Life: From Tragedy to Destiny

For Fabulous, I discuss how I had to let go of my rigid and unattainable (for me) definition of fabulous. It wasn’t until I embraced my quirks and idiosyncrasies that I realized that my fabulous is my own fabulousness. So celebrate what makes you you? Find it. Own it. Revel in it!

Oh and if you want to hear Jake's song and see our video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVTdrLzwexY

Lady, Woman ... a Bit of Both

I’m getting feisty with author/coach Timogi T. Jackson who says, in her latest book, I’m a Lady and a Woman. While all of us females are both, each of us tends to have either a Lady essence or a Woman essence that dominates. Timogi describes and celebrates each essence. While each one is different neither one is better or stronger or more useful than the other. I have a Lady essence but I know how and when to use my Woman essence. Which one are you? Listen in and find out.

You can find Timogi’s books (and even t-shirts) at her site: http://www.timogijackson.com

For fun, we’ll look at the trend towards automation and how with every technological step forward, we tend to take a step back in intelligence. Remember when we had to know how to spell instead of relying on spellcheck. Remember life before GPS?  Remember when we used to remember phone numbers? If smartphones are making us dumber, what will happen when we get smart cars and smart refrigerators?

Let’s feel fabulous by indulging in a little ME time. It’s great if you have an afternoon, an evening, a day or a whole weekend, but you can indulge in some me time with just a half hour. Doing something just for you isn’t selfish. It isn’t self-centered. It isn’t egotistical. It is necessary, needed and essential to our wellbeing.

Stop Dieting and Start Living!

Like a lot of women, Ellie Savoy got on and off the diet merry-go-round. After a while, she got tired of yo-yoing and decided to make some real changes … lasting changes with lasting weight loss and real lifestyle changes. In Stop Dieting, Start Living, she shows readers how they can do the same. On this episode, she shares the five steps she recommends to make healthy and enduring changes that can make a real difference. Over 40? Ellie says you don’t have to be resigned to a weight you aren’t happy with.

For Fun, I ask the question, “What happened to TV theme songs?” You barely if ever hear them anymore. And, what a shame that is because a good theme song often outlived the show. For this segment, I picked five theme songs off the top of my head. This list could have easily topped 25, because there were just so many and they were that good. I talk about these songs. You can go to YouTube to see the actual intros to the show.

Head on over to the Facebook page, and share your favorite theme song!

No is often hard to say. We don’t want to disappoint or let someone down. We also don’t want that nagging feeling of obligation. So, all too many times, we agree to things we don’t really want to do. The result is stress, overwhelm and overextension. Yet, you can say ‘No” with style, grace and not a lot of drama. You can Just say No or you can say No, but … or, finally, you can say No and give a reason. The No you use depends of the satiation and the relationship you have with the requestor. No can help you defend your time, set realistic boundaries and some times even save your sanity!

TIme to Fight Your Fears
  • Would you survive a zombie apocalypse?
  • What fears are holding you back?
  • Is health more than physical?

These questions (and maybe more) will be answered on this episode of the Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! podcast.

I came late to The Walking Dead party. Over the summer, I caught up on six seasons so I’d be all caught up when Season 7 started. I’ve been watching it weekly; but I have to admit, I don’t think I’m cut out to be a zombie apocalypse survivor and I’ll tell you why.

Tawanna Kelley is one of my Fab Femmes (you can catch those episodes every month). However, she’s also a motivational speaker who specializes in leadership training and on helping people overcome fear. She talks about the fears we have and what we can do to overcome them. It’s time to make your dreams come true and you don’t have time to let fear stop you.

Finally, it is hard to feel fabulous if you don’t feel your best. Yet, health is more than physical. Taking care of your emotional and mental health is just as important. I share my story of suicide and depression to drive home the point that you are never too old, and it is never too late to seek emotional or mental health. It’s time to end the mental health stigma and embrace all facets of our health.

Finding the Funny

Vikki Claflin is the author of two books, Shake, Rattle and Roll with It and Who Left the Cork Out of My Lunch. She is a blogger, author and humorist. Her first book chronicles her diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease and her second takes an amusing look at aging. Vikki has the gift of finding the humor in almost anything.

She is a guest on the Fun and Feisty segments of the show. First, we discuss the demise of business casual. When did it become okay to wear club clothes to work? Even if you feel like you just rolled out of bed, is it okay to show up in your PJs? Whatever happened to slips? Exposing your midriff at work, really? Vikki and I tackle these tough questions and more!

Next, Vikki discusses the importance of humor in keeping a positive outlook and why laughing at yourself is critical (especially as you attempt a pole dance!). Of course, you can’t apply humor to every situation but you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how often you can. And, cultivating the ability to laugh at yourself is essential.

The fabulous Bettye Beach would have turned 77 on the day this was uploaded (November 22). I wish I had more photos of my mom. Take the time to take pictures, even when you don’t feel like it, to give your kids and grandkids something to remember you by.

Fab Femmes

About once a month, I take a break from the usual format and devote the show to me and a girlfriend or two just talking. A little girl talk can be fun. I call these episodes Fab Femme because it’s just a couple of fabulous females dishing.

On today’s show, my guest is Tawanna Kelly. Like me, she is a learning and development professional AND she’s also a business owner and a motivational speaker. We had a great time talking about

  • Things millennials will never experience (like life before call waiting and cell phones)
  • When it comes to dating what is your age range (how many years younger and older will you go)
  • What are the basics you need to leave the house feeling (and looking) fabulous?

Fab Femmes is about kicking back and having a good time. So, listen and laugh!

And So It Begins

It’s the premiere episode of the Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! podcast – a podcast designed for professional women over 40!

While most episodes will go from 30 – 40 minutes, this episode is short and to the point, introducing who I am (Karyn Beach, host/producer) and then defining exactly what I mean by fun, feisty and fabulous.

Oh, and I’ll also announce our first contest! Two lucky winners will receive $100 Amazon gift cards … just in time for holiday shopping!

Who are You?

I’m Karyn Beach, host of Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! and former host of the Get It Together Girl podcast. While I have a degree in journalism, I stepped away from that field a long time ago. Yet, I still missed it. Podcasting gives me the opportunity to go back to one of my first loves.

My second love is writing, so I blog at www.funfeistyfab.com and I have self-published five books available on Amazon.com. I’m also a certified life coach and as such, I am committed and passionate about helping others live their lives to the fullest.

I used to say that in the newspaper of life, I would be a comic strip somewhere between Cathy and the Far Side. However, it is 2016 and no one reads newspapers anymore. So, in the myriad of cable and on-demand networks, I would be a television show, sort of a cross between The New Girl and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. In upcoming episodes, there will be plenty of time to share dating horror stories and embarrassing stories.

Why Fun. Feisty. Fabulous!

With Get It Together Girl, I dove right in and created weekly episodes for about 2 years. I had fun and interviewed some amazing people. The only problem was that I dove in so quickly, I didn’t really prepare as I should have. I kept learning things I should have done before the show started or while it was still relatively new to boost my listenership.

Clearly, a redo was in order. In the spring of 2016, I discontinued Get It Together Girl and took some time to research and prepare my new show. This time, instead of reaching out to all women, I would focus on women like me, professional women over 40.

When I googled ‘women over 40’, I found a lot of dating and fashion advice. Like you, I think I’m a little bit more than what I wear and who’s on my arm. And just like that, Fun. Feisty. Fabulous was born.

What is this all about?

Fun. Feisty. Fabulous! (or Triple F because the full name can be a mouthful) celebrates who we are at this point in our lives. 40 isn’t the new 30. 40 is 40. 45 is 45. 50 is 50 and so on. You’ve lived a life filled with experience and knowledge and that should be acknowledged and celebrated. You have earned your age so embrace it.

When I talk about fun, I’m talking about anything that brings you peace and relaxation and that could be anything from taking a stroll to an afternoon of shopping or an night of amazing sex! In the stricter sense, fun is about laughter, goofiness and just being silly! We’ll do that too!

That fighting spirit, that fierce independence is what I am talking about when I talk about being feisty. As we grow older we naturally grow feistier, get better at speaking up for ourselves and going after what we want. In this segment, we’ll feature real women who have embraced their feistiness and have an incredible story to tell.

New episodes are available every Tuesday around noon. Listen on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and other podcast outlets.

Join the Triple F Facebook community to comment on the show or connect with other fun, feisty and fabulous women.

What's Your Excuse?

What’s Your Excuse?

That’s the question today’s feisty guest, Maxwell Ivey answers every week on his podcast. While completely blind, Maxwell is a successful businessman, blogger, author, and most recently podcaster. His inspirational life is a testament to wat happens when you leave the excuses behind. Maxwell talks about his journey, how to move through doubt and how small actions can lead to big results! We met when I interviewed him on my previous podcast and became fast friends. I knew I had to have him as a guest on Fun. Feisty. Fabulous. Listen in as Maxwell talks about his latest adventure.

Sometimes ranting can be fun. You get something off your chest and it can be fun to listen to someone else’s rants. In this spirit, I talk about a trip to the grocery store and what I encountered just trying to pick up two things. From walking the grocery store parking lot mile to doing someone else’s job all the way through environmental waste, maybe you can relate.

If you have another rant, click here or go to the Facebook page to add your five cents (we all know your opinion is worth more than two cents).

For the fabulous, we talk about what you can do after a long week to rest, relax, rejuvenate and reclaim your fabulous. We all know about a night out with the girls, an evening in with the partner but what else can you do? Let’s explore some other opportunities and one involves Jake the wonder dog (that’s him).
